As reported by the German Wine Institute (DWI), the current wine consumption analysis shows a volume of 19.9 liters of wine, which was theoretically consumed per capita in Germany during the 12-month period. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to a decrease of 0.8 liters of wine or four percent per person and year. Per capita consumption of sparkling wine remained constant over the same period at a volume of 3.2 liters.

In addition to wine purchases from retail, this wine consumption analysis also comprises the off-trade. The calculation is based on the amount of 16.7 million hectoliters of wine and 2.7 million hectoliters of sparkling wine consumed in Germany. Converted to the total German population, which has grown by almost one million people to 84.1 million inhabitants compared to the previous year, this results in a wine per capita consumption of 23.1 liters of wine and sparkling wine per year. According to the DWI, the development of wine consumption in Germany can be attributed to demographic change and changes in consumer behavior in society.
